Devasena Priya - New Ragam Created by me

Hi All

I created a new ragam called DevasEnA Priya few years before with the blessings of Lord Sri Murugan with his divine blessings as a spark when I was thinking that I never composed any song on his praise in Sanskrit although I composed hundreds of songs on his name in Tamizh. This thought came when I was playing Veena and suddenly I conceived the tune and composition as a spark which happens every time when I compose . when I sung " Mayura Vaahana vaLLi mana mohana" , I felt a great divinity and a new tune. When I realised that this tune is new , I wondered which ragam it is. This is Janya ragam of Charukesi (26 mela raga) with ri ( rishabha) varjya. The Arohanam and Avarohanam is s g3 m1 p d1 n2 S & S n2 d1 p m1 g3 s, a shadava upanga janya ragam. I traced everywhere in books and wiki and other places but didn't find any such ragams existing in this scale. Then with the blessings of Murugan , I named this Ragam as "Devesena Priya" and interestingly this composition bears this name Devesena Priya in two places and used "d" as swaraksharam in many words where "da" is occurring. I have been using "Marakata" as my mudra( Signature) in all my compositions since 2008 when divine interception directed me to compose and it's the blessings of my Guru Smt.Ranjani Chander, Chennai ( Daughter of my Guru Acharya Ratnakata Smt. T R Balamani  , Mumbai) who was pivotal in identifying and encouraging me to compose and also she is still teaching some of my compositions to her students in Chennai and also setting tunes. It was a blessing for me that my Guru Acharya Ratnakara Smt. T R Balamani named me as composer in many occasions in Mumbai in Sabhas like Rasika Ranjani Sabha and also in Chennai Music Academy during her Felicitation conducted by Vidushi Smt Bombay Jayashri. Also Guru T R Balamani tuned few of my compositions on the spot and taught to her disciples and me. 

Both of my above gurus were  pivotal for my divine path as a composer with their full hearted blessings and guidance. My mudra is coming in Pallavi itself as " Marakata Velayudha". 

I kept this Ragam and composition with me and singing to myself. This year , in the month of June ( June-2017), I taught this new ragam/new song to my Twin Disciples Kumari Gauri and Gayatri, Residing in San Diego, USA. This song I shared to my Gurus Vidushi Smt. Ranjani Chander (Chennai) , Sangeet Vidvan Smt. Rajeshwari Srinivasan ( Pune) and Vidushi Smt. Dharini Ganesh ( Pune) and took their blessings on 25-7-2017. 

Also had sung this composition to my Pune Guru Sangeet Alankar Smt. Meenakshi Subramaniam who shaped my musical journey and taught me music and taught me everything from the basic about the practical and theoretical aspects of Carnatic music for many years and took her blessings on 30-9-2017. 

My Guru Dharini Ganesh released this song to the public on 28-7-2017 and published in Pune Arunagiri Whatsapp group and its liked by one and all.

மரகதமே என்று நினைத்தவுடன் எனதம்மை மருவத்தூர் மந்திர நாயகிதான் மனதிற்குள் நுழைகிறாள்..!! உண்மைதானே .... மாய மந்திரம் அறியாத உன்னதமான மனத்தில் உன்மத்த நடனமாடுபவள் அவளன்றி வேறு யார்...!!...உன்னதம் என்ற சொல்லுக்கு உயர்ந்த விளக்கமே அவள்தான்...!! உயர்ந்ததோர் ஆசனத்தில் அமர்ந்து அகத்தில் உயர்ந்தோர்க்கு அருளை அள்ளி அள்ளி வெள்ளமாக வழங்குபவள் ..!! அம்மா வருவாயா என்று கேட்பதற்குமுன்பே நமக்கு முன்னர் பிரத்யக்ஷமாகிவிடும் பெரும் வள்ளல் அவள்..!! வள்ளல் என்றால் சாதாரணமான வள்ளல் இல்லை...வல்லமை தரும் வள்ளல்...வளமை தரும் வள்ளல்..வன்மை தரும் வள்ளல்..வாக்குதிறம் தரும் வள்ளல்..வரம் தரும் வள்ளல்...வாஞ்சையை தரும் வள்ளல்..அள்ள அள்ள பெருகும் அமுதசுரபியவள்...!! அம்மா..கொடு என்றால்..கொடுத்தேனே என்று நம்மிடம் திருப்பி கேட்பாள்..!!!...நீ கேட்டதை மறந்தாயோ மகனே...!!...நான் கொடுத்து மிக நேரம் ஆகியதே என்று நாம் கேட்டதை நமக்கே நினைவுபடுத்துபவள் ...!!..அவள் தருவதை யாரும் தடுப்பதுமில்லை..தடுக்க நினைப்பதும் இல்லை...தருவதற்காகவே தரணியில் வேரூன்றியவள்..தர்மத்தை காக்க வேம்பாய் அவதரித்து ....பாம்பாய் உருவெடுத்து...அக்னி பிழம்பாய் ஆரோகணித்து...அருள் குழம்பாய் ..குழவி நம்மை குழந்தாய் என்று அன்பை ஊட்டி....அருளை காட்டி..அருகிலே வைத்து அழகு பார்ப்பவள்..!!..அன்னையின் இலக்கணத்துக்கு இலக்காய் இருப்பவள்..!!!...அன்னையே என்று அழைக்க அருகாமையில் இருப்பவள்..!! அம்மையே என்றால்....எம்மையா அழைத்தாய் என்று வாஞ்சையாய் வருபவள்..!! தாயின் தார்மீக குணங்கள்தான் எத்தனை எத்தனை ...!! அம்மம்மா...அவள் அருளுக்கு அளவு ஏது..அளவுகோல் ஏது..அளக்கவும் முடியுமா...!!!அளக்க முடியாத அளவுக்கு அசைக்க முடியாத அற்புதம் அவள்..!! அற்புதம் அவளுக்கு ஒருகணம்தானே..!! ஒருகணத்தில் ஒருயுகத்தையே ஆட்டி படைப்பவள்...!! ஒருகணத்தில் கோடி கோடி மனத்துள் ஆட்சி செய்பவள்..ஒரு கணத்தில் கோடி கோடி மனத்துள் மகிமையை காட்டுபவள்..!! ஒரு கணத்தில் கோடி பாவத்தையும் ஓடி ஒளிய செய்பவள்..!!..ஓங்கார வடிவான அன்னை ஓடி வந்து கோடி கோடி மக்களின் பாவங்களையும் பழிகளையும் தனதாக கருதி ஏற்கிறாள்...ஏற்பதோடு மட்டுமில்லாமல் அதனில் இருந்து விலக்கி வாழ்வில் ஏற்றத்தையும் தருகிறாள்...!!! பாவத்தை புனிதமாக்கும் பவித்ரமானவளும் புனிதமும் அவளே...!!அவளின் முக மண்டலம் ஒன்றே நம் பாவ மண்டலங்களை பொடியாக்கும் அருள் மண்டலம்..!! அருள் விழியின் ஒளியே...நமது இருள் உள்ளத்தை ஒளிர செய்யும் ஒளி மண்டலமாகும்..!!! நாத ஒலியாக..நாத பிழம்பாக..நாதமே உருவான யம்பிராட்டியின் செவ்வாயில் இருந்து உதிரும் முத்துக்களை ... கேட்பதற்கு கோடி புண்யம் செய்திருக்க வேண்டுமே...!!! அத்தனை அற்புதமான மதுர வாக்விலாசிநியவள் ...!! வசீகரம் என்ற சொல்லுக்கு வசங்கரியாய் இருப்பவள்..!! காமனின் தாயான அவள்...கண்ணாலேயே...கோடி வசந்தத்தை வசீகரம் செய்பவள்..கோடி கோடி குழந்தைகளின் மனத்தில் ஆசனிப்பவல்...!! கோடி மனத்தை நொடியில் வசீகரம் செய்பவள்...!!! வசீகரம் செய்வதில் அவள் அவனின் குழந்தை காமனை மிஞ்சுபவள்..!! மிஞ்சி தரும் வஞ்சியவள்..!! வாஞ்சையை வேரோடு வார்த்து ஆறாக மனத்தில் பாய்ச்சுபவள்..!!!...அஞ்சாதே மகனே என்று அருகிருந்து ஆசுவாச படுத்தும் அஞ்சுக மொழியவள்..மஞ்சுள மேதையவள்..!!! பசுமையான மரகதத்தின் ஒளியாக...குளிரை மனதிற்கு ஏற்படுத்தும் மணியாக....மனத்திற்கு வலிமையை தரும் மஹிமையாக .... உன்னத ரத்தினமான மரகதமாக ...மருவூரில் குடிகொண்டிருக்கிறாள் அன்னை அகிலாண்ட கோடி பிருமாண்ட நாயகி ஆதிபராஷக்தி...!! அவளின் சிவந்த ...செந்தாமரை நாணும் அருள் தாமரையான ...அருளை அள்ளி வெள்ளமாக வழங்கும் பாதத்தை அனுதினம் அடக்கத்துடன் அண்டி பாசத்துடன் ..பரிவுடன் ...பணிந்தால்..பராஷக்தி பரிவோடு நமை காப்பாள் ...கற்பகமாய் கருணையை பொழிவாள் என்பதில் சிறிதும் ஐயம் இல்லை...!!அகிலம் காக்கும் அன்னையே..கருணை கற்பகமே...!! பணிந்தோம் உன் பதமே...!!!

Maruvoor Mahimai

மருவூர் என்றாலே மஹிமை என்பதுதான் எனது மிக தாழ்வான கருத்து. அம்பாள் ஆதிபராஷக்தி அங்கு ஆரோகணித்திருக்கும் அழகும் ஆசனமும் மிக தெய்வீகமான காட்சி. அவளின் கண்களை கண்டு இன்புறும் இன்பம் வேறு எதற்கும் ஈடாக இருக்க முடியாது...!!..கண்களில் வழியும் அருள் வெள்ளம் ..கருணை வெள்ளம் ...அணை போட்டாலும் அதன் பிரவாகம் கட்டுக்கடங்காது...!! தாய்கெல்லாம் தாயான அவளின் தாயன்பு...சொல்லில் அடங்காது...மன்னிப்பாய் என்று அவளிடம் மண்டியிட்டால்..கட்டாயமாக மன்னிக்கும் மகிமைதான் அம்மை ஆதிபராசக்தி..!!
எனது வாழ்க்கையில் ...நான் அன்னையின் அற்புதங்களை அன்றாடம் பார்கிறேன்..பேசும் தெய்வம் அவள்...!! பேசாதவர்களை பேச வைப்பவள்..பாடாதவர்களை பாட வைப்பவள்...எழுதாதவர்களை எழுத வைப்பவள்...!! கல் மனத்தை கரைய வைப்பவள்...வன் மனத்தை வளைய வைப்பவள்..முள் மனத்தை மலராக்குபவள்....மலரினும் மெல்லிய மனம் கொண்ட அம்மையின்..மனம்..,,.மனம் உருகி அவளை பணிந்தால்...மடியில் வந்து அமர்ந்து கொள்வாள்...!! அத்தனை இரக்க குணமும்..பரந்த மனமும்....எதையும் பொறுக்கும் தாயன்பும்...அவளின் விலாசங்கள்..!!!...மூக்குத்தி ஒளியில்..மயங்காத மனமும்..உள்ளதோ..? எம்பெருமாட்டியின் அலங்காரத்தையும்..அழகு லாவண்யதையும்...காண கண் கோடி வேண்டும்...!! அற்புதத்தை அப்போதே அரங்கேற்றம் செய்பவள்..!! மரகத வடிவான அன்னை அவள்...மரகதம் போன்ற பசுமையே அவள் மனம்...!! மரகதம் போன்ற மன உறுதியளிக்கும் ரத்தினமே அவள்..!! எதற்கும் கலங்காத மனத்தை கொடுப்பவள்...நான் இருக்கிறேன் உன்னை காக்க என்று மார் தட்டி சொல்லும் பக்தியை மனதிற்கு கொடுக்கும் மந்திர மரகதமவள்..!! மருவூர் மரகதமே என்று அழைக்க அருகில் வந்து ..என்ன வேண்டும் மகனே என்று கேட்பவள்..!! மாசிலா வீணையின் நாதம் போல தூய்மையானவள் ...!! மாணிக்க மரகத ஒளி போன்ற தேக காந்தியையுடையவள்..!! முத்தும் வைரமும் போன்று மாசிலாதவள்...!!..நீலக்கல் போல நீண்ட கண்மலரை கொண்டவள்..!! புஷ்பராகம் ஒத்த மங்கள ஆடை அணிந்தவள் ...!!..பவளம் போன்ற மதுர மொழி பேசும் தாமரை இதழ் கொண்டவள்..!!..கோமேதகமும்..வைடூர்யமும் சேர்த்து கோர்த்து ...தங்கத்தினால் ஆன...அணிகலன்களை ...தங்க நிற அங்கத்தில் ...பங்கம் இல்லாத என் அன்னை அணிபவள்..!!!....பாலும் ...தோற்கும் முத்து பல்லினை உடையவள்...!!!...மாதுளம் தோற்கும்..செவ்வாய் அழகினை உடையவள்..!! அவள் திருவாயிலிருந்து உதிரும் முத்துக்களை கோர்க்க...நம் கைக்கு வலிமை இருக்கிறதா...!!ஆனால்...அதே கைக்கும் வலிமையை தருவாள்...அன்னை ஆதிபராசக்தி...!!...வாக்கினை ஆளும் எம்பெருமாட்டி எழுது என்று சொல்லும்போது...அதற்கு குறுக்கில் நிற்க நாம் யார்....!!! எழுத்தும் அவளே ..எழுதுபவளும் அவளே...!!..எழுத்தாகி நிற்பவளும்.அவளே...எழுந்து வந்து காப்பவளும் அவளே...!! ஏழைக்கு இறங்குபவளும் அவளே...!! எழுபிறவிக்கு முக்தி தருபவளும் அவளே...!! ஏழு ஸ்வரமும் அவளே...!!! ஏழை என் எழுத்தும் அவளே...!! கருத்தில் நிற்கும் கற்பகம் அவளே...மனத்தில் நிற்கும் மரகதம் அவளே..நெஞ்சில் நிற்கும் நீலாயதாக்ஷியும் அவளே...!!..கொஞ்சி பேசும் கோமளமும் அவளே..!!..அஞ்சல் தரும் அபயாம்பிகை அவளே..!! கருணை கடல் காமாட்சியும் அவளே..!! மதுர மொழியாள் மீனாக்ஷியும் அவளே..!! மாந்தரை காக்கும் காந்திமதியும் அவளே..!!!சிந்தனையில் சிந்தும் சிவகாமியும் அவளே..!! அஞ்சுக மொழி அபிராமியும் அவளே..!!..கமல விழி கமலாக்ஷியும் அவளே..!! காக்கும் கர்ப்ப ரக்ஷாம்பிகையும் அவளே..!!! லாவண்யம் மயங்கும் லலிதாவும் அவளே..!! புவனத்தை காக்கும் புவனேஸ்வரியும் அவளே..!! அகிலத்தை காக்கும் அங்காள பரமேஷ்வரியும் அவளே..!!...அவளே..அனைத்துக்கும் ஆதாரம் அவளே...!!! அவள் கருணைக்கு அளவில்லையே..!! அளவில்லாமல் அருளை பொழியும் அன்னையின் அருளை பற்றி சொல்வதற்கு வார்த்தைகள் புதியதாக தோன்ற வேண்டும்...!! உன்மத்தமான அவள் உன்னதம் வாழ்க...!!! வாழ்க மேல்மருவத்தூர் தாயே மரகதமே...!! மங்காத செல்வமே...!!! ..ஆல் போல் நின் அருள் பரந்திருக்க..அதில்..ஒரு ஓரம் நிழலுக்கு ஒதுங்கும்..இந்த பரம பாவி ஏழையை உன் சேவைக்காக ஏற்று கொள் தாயே...தயாபரி...!!..ஒதுங்கினேன் என்று சொன்னதால் என்னை ஓரம் கட்டி ஒதுக்கி விடாதே...நீயும் ஒதுக்கினால்...ஒடுங்குவது ஒன்றே கடைசியாக இருக்கும்...அதுவும் உனதருகே...உன்னை கண்டு கொண்டே... உன் குளிர் நிழலில் தான் இருக்கும்..தாயே...!!...

Rare Ragas of interest

Recently i came across a raga called KANNADA Bangala, a Janya Ragam of Maya Malava Gowla and is very much similar to Malahari..with a scale...SRMPDS SDMPMGRS and malahari..we have SDPMGRS as avarohanam..Very interesting raga and i heard a kriti composed by Sri.Muthuswamy Dikshitar in the praise of Renuka Devi( The creator of Parashurama), a superb composition and i heard this kriti rendered by Mr.Prasanna Venkatraman , a leading carnatic Vocalist (student of My Guru..TR.Balamani and Sanjay Subramanyam) in Sringeri Sharada matt, Chembur, Mumbai. The song starts with Renuka devi and a brilliant composition starting with D, D,..... gives a great effect. This raga closely resembles with a Hindustani raga Gunkari or Gunkali with a scale of SRMPDSSDPMRS....!!! Ilayaraja composed a cine piece in this raga in the film (Tanduvitten ennai---Name of teh song..Kannukulle ) wherein he brigns out the another aspect called graha bedam , when we take 'R" as Shadjam we will get Amritavarshini from the scale...!!!The composition of this song remnisces both Gunkari and Amritavarshini.
After the inspiration and beauty of this RENUKA DEVI song, we requested our Guruji to teach us this kriti and she started teaching this Kriti...a great time we had after hearing/learning this kriti.

What is cream of Carnatic Music?

The cream of Carnatic Music is lying in the way we present the form of music either through vocal or instrumental....my Great-guru Smt.T.R.Balamani always says that carnatic music should be heavy and we are never allowed to sing light doses while we sing any form of carnatic pieces and she is correct that the cream of carnatic music is the way we handle the ragas with more Azhuttham(pressure) and that is the school of Smt.T.R.Balamani..the renowned Music Maha Guru in Mumbai( A disciple of Musiri, TK.Govinda Roa and many more stalwarts of Carnatic music)

If we like to drink the nectar of Carnatic music, then it is must to understand the intricasies of a raga and how to handle it in a correct manner so that we can hear and drink the cream of Carnatic Music..now a days many musicians started handling it in a lighter doses which is not fair and can be looked into it deeply.
